TheTop to Bottom Asphalt Shingle Roofs: Layers and Components of an Asphalt Shingle Roofing System
A properly installed asphalt shingle roof is much more than just the shingles you see from the street. Each layer plays an important role in protecting your home. Here’s how your roofing system is built from the bottom up:
- Roof Decking: The foundation of your roof is made of a layer of plywood or oriented strand board (OSB), providing structural support for all other components.
- Ice and Water Shield: A waterproof membrane installed in valleys and along eaves to prevent water damage from ice dams and heavy rain.
- Synthetic Underlayment: A water-resistant layer covering the entire roof deck, providing a secondary barrier against moisture.
- Starter Shingles: Special shingles are installed along the roof’s edges to provide proper water shedding and wind resistance.
- Asphalt Shingles: The primary water-shedding layer in various styles and colors are designed to protect against UV rays and weather.
- Aluminum Drip Edge: A roof’s aluminum drip edge protects the roof and underlying structures from water damage and pest damage and provides a clean finish to your roofline.
- Ridge Vents: Installed along the roof’s peak to allow proper attic ventilation, essential for preventing moisture buildup and extending shingle life.
- Flashing: Metal components installed around chimneys, vents, and valleys to direct water away from vulnerable areas.
- Hip and Ridge Caps: Specially designed shingles that protect and beautify the roof’s peaks and hips while ensuring water-tight seals.
